The Green Gazumba

The Green Gazumba first appeared in 1986 when counselor David Peling, dressed in a green costume, began to make unexpected appearances throughout camp.  Over the ensuing years the tail of the Gazumba has been sought after by campers of every session.  It may appear at any time, and when it does the chase is on.  Until 1995, the capture and trophy of the tail remained illusive; however, a plaque mounted on the wall of the craft house bears the name of the first camper to do the unthinkable.  The Green Gazumba has been captured only once (by Richard Sibley).  It can be done, but will it happen again?

First, the weather throughout session one was gloomy to say the least. Besides the first two days of the session, every subsequent day was cloudy and rainy.  Rain showers and soggy grass do not equal good gazumba running weather.  Finally, the sun came out one afternoon for more than 20 minutes and Austin came down to get me.  The plan was to fit in as many runs as possible into the afternoon.  The first two runs of the afternoon were on the main lawn.  Ben and I were in the back of the gator covered by the tarp.  Blake said “Go” and we...

8/6/13, Ben Pelegano: “Cartoon Speed”

By the 4th session we should have had the squirrels run down pat. Every session, we sneak down to the Chipmunk’s cabin where the Squirrels lie unsuspecting. We have two very simple rules; be silly not scary, and of course, “Don’t Get Caught”. On this particular run, I had the go-pro a (small portable camera) attached to my head. This was one of the first runs that utilized the head strap; therefore, I was feeling a bit more rambunctious than usual. I was so amped that I almost fell backwards out of the car when we arrived at the drop off...

First off, I’ll explain what it means to, “shoot the gap”.  It’s pretty simple, you run from the car at the side of the pool building, across the gap between the basketball courts and the dance tent.  Sounds simple, right?  Well, for whatever reason, when Joe and I do this run, we always seem to be on on the verge of catastrophe. The first time, the Eagles under the dance tent must have seen us because we got over the ridge at the tree line and I see Blake all over this run.  About ten feet from the woods he was on Joe, but one quick move and...

Joe Bruno: Day 1, 1st Run

Nervous and excited, I was glad to wake up this morning.  For the past year I had been thinking of going on a Gazumba run and the fateful day had finally come.  It was 3rd period  and my Bears were at Sloyd.  I got taken up to the craft house and Tyler and I were ready.  This was it! We got suited up, got into the truck and started to head down the hill.  My heart felt like it was going to explode and I couldn’t stop shaking.  Tyler seemed nervous, but not nearly as much as me.  Our first run was going to be for the Chipmunks.  They were at...

So today was almost like a mini Gazumbathon for me.  Joe and I did a couple of runs together; jumping in front of and behind the Craft House and running across the main lawn.  Near the end, Blake had Joe go back to the Bears at Arts and Crafts, but had me stay for another special run.  In the shop there was still the large freezer box from when we got the new one… and yeah, I went under it.  But even better that that, it was pushed through the Craft House (which was full of Bears) while I was under it.  When I got to the end, Austin flipped...

Since my first run, I couldn’t wait to do more of them.  That being said, I hadn’t had a close encounter yet.  The plan for today’s run was to shoot the gap, a.k.a. run through the cut through between the courts and the dance tent.  We needed to be really quick or we would get caught in a hairy predicament. Once the run started I was scanning as best I could for any close campers.  About halfway through, I see Dan coming after me.  I think to myself, “oh boy, I’m going to either have to beat him to the woods or dodge him up close.  Luckily,...
